Description
Goat Simulator 3 for PC heralds the return of the video gaming world’s most elaborate joke – a raucous rag-dolling adventure in which you are, as the name implies, a goat. The very name of this game plays into the fun: there is no Goat Simulator 2. It is called 3 because when the developers were planning the game, they used GS3 as a jokey working title and then… just ran with it. And why not?
About the Game
Set on the fictious island of San Angora, this iteration of the game features four-player co-op play with three or buddies. There are literally hundreds of events and easter eggs to uncover and play through. It also features a story mode for the first time, introducing you to the Goat Illuminati.
The first game was open-world chaos, with the player taking on the guise of an unruly goat, running amok, sticking its tongue out at everyone else, and head-butting civilians in true goatly form, and this is more of the same, albeit with a tiny bit more deliberation and directness.
You do not only have to play as a goat. Well you do, because they are all called goats, BUT you can take on the form of a pig (tasty goat), rhino (angry goat) shark (wet goat?) or a giraffe (tall goat) amongst many other whacky characters. Keep your eyes open for the old lady with the rocket launcher, and far from avoiding her, she is a prize worth defeating if you can work out how.
Talking about wackiness, this is a game in which you can play as a shark on a skateboard being ridden by rocket-launcher lady… Try and beat that level of surrealism elsewhere.
There are more than 350 cosmetic (and not so cosmetic) items that can change your look and in some cases, your powers.
In this game, the NPCs are more active, with better AI – police officers for example will try quite determinedly to stop or catch you, and other NPCs, if frightened or annoyed might come and kick you! Try to get a police officer into trouble, however and they will end up trying to arrest themselves, which is always good for a giggle.
Your goaty powers can combine, so collect and activate as many as you can and then try them all out, in groups or all at once to see what happens.
The Nitty Gritty
The original game got its start at a game jam (a brainstorming session in which games are built from scratch) and its rough and ready coding actually became one of the game’s USPs. Playing to its popularity, the sequel is more of the same, and yet it is somehow filtered through a new and improved sophistication while still holding onto the charm that attracted so many fans.
Mission goals include bleating aloud, hopping over fences and flying about with a jet pack. Disasters are not always as bad as they first seem: electrocuting yourself gives you the power to blast lightning, while setting yourself on fire gives you dragon-like fireballs. Other powers you can acquire in this way include oil and ‘stinkiness’.
The first game could be completed in one hour, but this one needs more like 30. This is not surprising with a map that is eighteen times bigger than the first. The original game was so much fun because it was buggy and glitchy and while this game is more polished, the developers have deliberately left in some of the more ‘fun’ glitches to keep the entertainment levels high.
An unserious game but a seriously fun one.
Minigames to Try
With co-op play you can play mini games that you unlock at various points in the game. Once they are unlocked, you can open them anywhere in the sandbox world: up a mountain, in the street, right next to a lake… Completing and wining these games can give you enhanced powers
- Hoofball: soccer with giant balls, basically
- The Floor is Lava: needs no real explanation
- Treasure Hunt: what will you find?
- Golf: golf – but goat style, means fun for all
